Art Therapy: An Unconventional Approach to Overcome Mental Health Challenges

Updated: Oct 20, 2024

The Healing Benefits of Art Therapy

When we talk about mental health, traditional therapy often takes centre-stage. But there's a rising star in the world of healing: art therapy. This engaging practice uses painting, sculpture, music, and other creative forms to tackle mental health issues, including those driven by stigmas, discrimination, and trauma. Art therapy provides a safe space for individuals to express feelings, confront past experiences, and promote emotional recovery.

Art can speak where words often fall short. For those who struggle to express their emotions verbally, art therapy serves as a powerful tool. Engaging with art allows people to explore their feelings in depth, helping to illuminate emotions that might otherwise remain hidden.

In this post, we’ll delve into how art acts as a healing resource, the basics of art therapy, and the wide-ranging benefits it provides against mental health challenges.

The Impact of Stigmas and Discrimination on Mental Health

Stigmas and discrimination around mental health can create significant obstacles for people seeking help, yet many don’t seek treatment due to fear of judgment. This fear can intensify feelings of isolation, leading to worsened mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.

Instead of speaking about their struggles openly, many may turn inward, exacerbating their issues. Art provides a refreshing change by allowing individuals to articulate their experiences creatively, without the worry of being misunderstood. For example, creating a piece of art can be a private means of exploring feelings associated with trauma, offering initial steps toward recovery.

The Fundamentals of Art Therapy

Art therapy combines psychological principles with creative processes. Certified art therapists tailor a range of techniques to meet individual needs, guiding participants in expressing thoughts and emotions through visual arts, music, or dramatic play.

One key principle of art therapy is its universal nature. Art is a language understood by people of different cultures and backgrounds, often offering a more relatable form of communication than words.

This therapy creates a non-threatening space where emotions can be processed through creativity. For instance, rather than discussing a painful memory, a client might choose to represent it through a painting, initiating discussion and reflection in a comfortable way.

Healing Through Expression

Art therapy can be life-changing. It allows individuals to externalize emotions in a way that leads to valuable insights into their feelings and experiences.

Imagine someone dealing with chronic anxiety who finds relief in creating a collage that represents their feelings. The act of making art can provide a sense of control and a way to channel emotions that may otherwise feel overwhelming.

Additionally, art therapy can uncover deeper emotions. When individuals create, they may stumble upon hidden thoughts that impact their mental state. This self-discovery is essential for true healing.

Benefits of Art Therapy for Mental Health

1. Enhanced Emotional Awareness

Art therapy allows individuals to access and express emotions visually. For example, a study found that creative expression can increase emotional awareness by 70%. Through art, individuals become more adept at identifying and discussing their feelings.

2. Reduced Anxiety and Stress

Artistic activities can significantly decrease anxiety levels. Engaging in creative processes reduces stress hormones and fosters relaxation. For instance, research shows that after just 45 minutes of engaging in art-making, anxiety levels can drop by 75%.

3. Improved Communication Skills

For those who find it challenging to express emotions, art therapy provides a unique outlet. Participants often gain confidence in sharing their thoughts creatively, which can translate to better verbal communication over time.

4. Building Resilience and Coping Strategies

Art therapy cultivates resilience as individuals learn to navigate emotional challenges. It offers opportunities for accomplishment and boosts self-esteem, promoting confidence in facing future adversities.

5. Fostering Connection with Others

Group art therapy can build a sense of community. Participants share their stories and emotions, creating bonds that alleviate feelings of loneliness. This connection can be pivotal for those feeling isolated in their struggles.

Overcoming Barriers to Accessing Art Therapy

While art therapy brings numerous benefits, barriers can limit access for many individuals. Increasing knowledge about art therapy can help reduce stigma.

Communities can benefit significantly from integrating art therapy programs in schools, healthcare settings, and local wellness initiatives. A holistic approach to mental health treatment will encourage more individuals to seek support openly.

The Pathway to Emotional Healing

Art stands as a valuable ally in addressing mental health challenges. As an innovative approach to therapy, art therapy promotes genuine expression, reflection, and the development of coping strategies within a supportive environment.

Although the journey to mental well-being may have its hurdles, art offers an appealing avenue for healing. It enables individuals to confront their pain and transform it into beauty.

As we advocate for mental health awareness, we should embrace the role of art in healing. By encouraging creative expression within mental health services, we can foster a cultural shift that recognizes various therapeutic pathways. The journey with art awaits, offering hope and healing for those ready to take that first step forward.

Empower Women for Change has united forces with the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival to ignite the initiative towards Art Therapy as a valuable tool for Mental Health challenges caused by Stigmas, Discrimination, Trauma and more. The School of Health and Wellbeing located at the Pearl Building at 90 Byres Road Glasgow, is collaborating with this fascinating and important journey. This place gave a home to a group of very talented women from a plethora of culturally diverse backgrounds. There, they were able to attend the Course of Beyond the Canvas: Voices Unveiled, in which they were able to unmask, unburden, and be free to share their personal experiences, and through collaboration, created all kinds of Art as a Therapy tool for Expression and Healing. The exhibition will be up for public view throughout the month of October 2024! This exhibition is showcasing the Original artworks of all these magnificent women, including yours truly.

About "Embracing Diversity"

As a woman born in Puerto Rico, the first thing we learn in history is how we became who we are. We are taught that our race is a mix of the Spaniards, the Africans and the Taíno Indigenous of our land. We are taught that we encapsulate the best qualities of these three bloods that run through our veins. This is why in one single family we may have a very white skinned cousin with wavy blond hair and blue eyes, a very tanned cousin with straight black hair and honey eyes, and a black cousin with the dark brown eyes and curly hair. As a Boricua, we are taught to embrace and love diversity and that colour means nothing, for we are all family!

Living in this “modern” world that makes up new divisive labels on a daily basis, it is crucial for me to express how it impacts me and those who like me Embrace Diversity. We were never meant to focus on what is different between us, but rather what we have in common. And should we focus on what is different, it should be celebrated, and learned from. When it comes to race however, we are but ONE race. As I shared in my poem, we are The Human Race! And once we see each other in this light, everything else shouldn’t matter. Truth is, this world would be very dull if we were all the same. The real beauty is in everything that makes us unique and when unified as a single collective, it all becomes a master piece.

Who we are goes far beyond our cultural background. In the end it is our character, values, morals and the way we treat each other what really defines who we truly are. Embracing Diversity is a great start to a better future for the Human Race. Love unconditionally. Love yourself, Love thy neighbour, Love those around you including the strangers that walk by.

Diversity is a concept of understanding that each individual is unique, and that each of our individual differences share a purpose in society. In order to progress in our own personal development, we have the responsibility to ask questions, seek for answers and learn about many different topics. The more we embrace diversity within our communities, the more we can learn.

Embracing diversity is important because it fosters creativity and innovation by bringing together different perspectives, experiences, and ideas. This can lead to more effective problem-solving and a greater range of solutions.

Embracing diversity promotes a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity. Additionally, diverse communities are better equipped to understand and serve a wide range of needs, leading to more effective and sustainable solutions to social and economic challenges.

Embracing diversity can lead to a richer and more vibrant cultural exchange, promoting understanding and empathy among people from different backgrounds.

So, let us embrace one another, learn from each other, love, respect and treat each other with kindness. For we are all beautifully different and that makes us all valuable! Hey, no good food would taste as good if it wasn’t for the addition of many different spices! It is in the mix, that great flavours come from! Cheers!

This art piece is a symbol of what is the natural way. We are the Human Race, unified as ONE collective. She is Diversity! And she embodies us all. Diversity's skin has many shades as we all do. She self-embraces in a maternal loving way and by doing so, she embraces us all. She is naked and imperfect, but that is who we are! We are full of imperfections, which is what make us unique and remarkable.

She is at peace, feeling serenity and love. Her hair is not wavy, curly or straight. It is made by human hands, the hands of the artist who has three different ethnicities running through her veins. This symbolises UNITY of multicultural hands. Her hair colours are red, orange, brown, black and blond, the natural hair colours of us all. On each hand there is a heart that symbolises how we all have within the reach of our hands the necessary qualities to embrace all that we are. Some hearts include all the different continents where we are all from, some faces that represent multiculturalism, and some hearts share amazing values and traits we must possess to achieve personal development and greatness as a society. The background is in gold which represents the importance of embracing Diversity and how priceless this action is.
